Introduction to the Language Services layout image

As outlined in article 6.5 of the University of Barcelona Statute, the twofold mission of the UB’s Language Services is to promote the study of Catalan and to provide the university community’s academic, technical and administrative bodies with multilingual language advisory services. As well as contributing to the standardised use of the Catalan language, it attends to the needs of multilingual communication across the university, focusing in particular on the following three areas: the use and development of Spanish and English as working languages in the European Higher Education Area, the revision of scientific texts in English for faculty and research staff, and the provision of a Catalan language resource program through which newly-arrived and non-Catalan-speaking students of all kinds can enrol in both in-class and Virtual Campus study programs, hereby acquiring their first listening and writing skills in this language and engaging more generally in Catalan language learning.

The Language Services comprises three units: Language Advisory Service and Terminology, Language Learning and Textual Support, and Catalan Language Promotion and Sociolinguistics. It also provides the university community with information about its various areas of activity and language advisory services at seven offices located on different campuses and offers users six multilanguage self-access centres, five of which are attached to university libraries.

Using the interactive channels between the university and the community at large, the Language Services maintains links with language service units in other Catalan universities via the Vives University Network, the Interuniversity Commission for Catalan Language Learning (CIFOLC), the Comissió Interuniversitària de Llenguatge Administratiu i Jurídic (CILAJ) (an interuniversity commission for administrative and judicial language), The Catalan Society of Terminology (SCATERM), the Mediterranean Editors and Translators network (MET), the Realiter Pan-Latin Network for Terminology and the RITerm Ibero-American Network for Terminology.
